MAKES 2 THICK 8-OUNCE SHAKES

The Black & White Shake may be basic, but it is also a gold standard. The ingredients are three of the staples in any ice cream shop, and also three things you’re likely to have at home: vanilla ice cream (the “white”), milk, and chocolate syrup (the “black”). That’s it. Only the smallest amount of chocolate syrup is needed to punch through and create a really robust shake. Don’t fight it—black-and-white it!

There are folks out there who feel very strongly about what brand of chocolate syrup makes the quintessential Black & White. Most old-school New Yorkers say it has to be Fox’s U-Bet brand. But, good lord, it’s chocolate syrup. It’s coming from a squeeze bottle. Just use what’s in your cupboard, people.

¾ cup whole milk

1 tablespoon chocolate syrup (or a big squirt if using a squeeze bottle)

4 large scoops Vanilla Ice Cream or Sweet Cream Ice Cream (Philly-Style or Egg-Based)
